Sergej Jensen Biography
Sergej Jensen, born in 1973 in Maglegaard, Denmark, is a contemporary artist who has carved a unique niche in the art world with his minimalist and innovative approach to painting. Jensen's work is characterized by its sparse aesthetic and the use of unconventional materials, which challenge traditional notions of painting and canvas. He currently lives and works between Berlin, Germany, and New York, NY.
Jensen's educational background includes studying at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under Professor Thomas Bayrle, which provided him with a solid foundation in the arts and influenced his later work. His approach to art is deeply rooted in the minimalist tradition, yet he brings a fresh perspective by incorporating a variety of textiles such as burlap, linen, silk, and wool into his compositions.
Jensen's artistic practice involves manipulating these materials through sewing, bleaching, stretching, or staining to create works that oscillate between abstraction and figuration. He pays close attention to the incidental details of his chosen fabrics, such as the texture of wool or the frayed edges of cloth, emphasizing the importance of negative space as much as the delineated forms. His muted palette and gestural mark-making, whether applied with paint or stained with bleach, contribute to the subtle yet profound visual language of his work.
The principle of the readymade and recycling is also central to Jensen's practice. He often reuses off-cuts from previous works as motifs for new paintings, and hand-knitted lengths are sewn or pulled over stretchers. Sections of fabric are sometimes left outside, allowing the weather to alter their surface, further integrating the element of chance into his creative process.
Jensen's work is not limited to textiles; he also incorporates materials foreign to traditional painting, such as patches, paper money, spices, beads, and glitter. He has even hung fabrics from windows to let the sun and rain contribute to their patina, and treated them with chlorine and paints mixed with bleach to reduce their brilliance.
Throughout his career, Jensen has had numerous solo exhibitions at prestigious venues around the world. Some of his notable solo exhibitions include "Sergej Jensen: Older Works and Shadow Paintings" at White Cube Bermondsey in London (2024), "Sergej Jensen: The Adult Light" at Regen Projects in Los Angeles (2022), and "Sergej Jensen" at Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland (2021). His work has also been featured in group shows such as "My Cartography: The Erling Kagge Collection" at Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, France (2020), and "Now is the time" at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany (2019).
Jensen's artworks are held in important public collections, including the Hamburger Banhoff – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin, LACMA – Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and SFMoMA – San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
The discourse surrounding Jensen's paintings often draws comparisons to the work of artists like Rosemarie Trockel, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, and Michael Krebber. However, it is his own production of music, films, and collaborative performances that exerts a significant influence over his practice. In gallery exhibitions, Jensen has been known to subvert the gallery context by arranging his paintings alongside domestic elements such as rugs or carpeting, further blurring the lines between art and everyday life.
Jensen's contributions to contemporary art have been recognized with participation in major exhibitions such as the Whitney Biennial in New York (2006), the 6th Berlin Biennale (2006), and the 26th Bienal de São Paulo (2004). His innovative approach to materials and the deconstruction of painting conventions continue to make him a significant figure in the contemporary art scene.
